Song of Blood is one of David's most highly
sought-after group projects. The first adaptation was created at the
Theatre Arts Department of Tel Aviv University in 1995, and then subsequently
revised and expanded through three more productions – in Denmark,
Belgium and again in Israel. This was the first of a series of investigations
into the understanding of tragedy as a "chronicle of a death
foretold," which, in turn, allows for a restructuring of time-frames
and multiple points of entry into the narratives.
Based on a lengthy period of experimentation through
improvisation with the major themes of the play, David ultimately
re-assembled the original text and the material from the improvisations
into a fractured, poetic collage that replaced the linear time-line
of the play with simultaneously played scenes and a mixture of the
past, present and "future" of the narrative, while retaining
the tragic thrust of the story. In this ad-aptation, the most radical
departure from Lorca's original concept is the doubling: every part
in the play is played by two actors. Performed in a rectangular space
with spectators on three sides, multiple scenes from different moments
in the play are played simultaneously by two sets of the same characters,
giving the audience a richly layered experience of the density and
collapsed time frame of tragedy.
